1. It can be overwhelming to have so many photographers listed in one area. What is the first step in beginning to search for the perfect engagement photographer?
Searching online can be a hugely overwhelming process; and with too much visual input, the photography starts to blur together and you can no longer differentiate between those you’ve looked at. We get a large percentage of our inquiries from direct referrals. Spend some time contacting friends that know someone or have recently gone through the process of wedding planning, and who found photographers they loved. Also, if you’re already using a wedding planner, find out the photographers they love to work with and who do great work that may match your style. Compile a list of 4 or 5 to start, and get in touch!
2. What is the most important thing about finding the perfect fit for a photographer, besides pricing and style?
The personal connection you have with your photographer is so important on your engagement and wedding day. Unlike most of the other vendors you’ll hire, your photographers will be with you, or near you, for almost your entire day, so you want to find the right personality and energy that you’d want to have around you on your wedding day. For your engagement session, that photographer should have the skills and artistic talent to deliver exceptional images, and they should be able to make your experience as relaxed and memorable was possible!
3. What advice would you give to couples who are trying to decide what kind of style they want for their photographs?
Briefly browse 5-10 photographer websites, and out of those identify the ones you’d want to keep coming back to. Make a short list of the things that you love about the images that are drawing you there, and use that as your search parameters. When you find your top 3 photographers, really dive into their portfolio and go a little deeper than just the website home page slideshow. View their galleries, view blog posts with engagement sessions and weddings to get a good idea of their style and the variety of images you can hope to receive from your experience.
4. Do you have a favorite style/theme to shoot with couples?
Our style for engagement sessions is one of fun & spontaneity, and we want it to have special meaning to the couple. We send out an engagement questionnaire that gets them thinking about the look and feel of their session, and we tailor the session to those things they love about each other. During the session, we guide our couples through relaxed poses, and always hang back just far enough away so that they can be themselves together and forget they are being photographed at all. The end goal is to come away with a gorgeous collection of images that represents the love the couple has for each other.
